4 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL ENGAGEMENT SESSION
Whether you’re recently engaged or you suspect the famous question may be asked soon, it’s never too early to start thinking about your engagement photos. Your engagement story is a beautiful thing that deserves to be documented. However, as a photographer, I know some people may be shy or nervous to get in front of the camera. Here are the four most important tips I hope will help you have a successful engagement photo shoot.
1. CHOOSE A GREAT LOCATION
Great backdrops really make a photo stand out, so really think about a good location for your engagement session. You can’t go wrong if you shoot at a location that’s important to you, such as the place where you met or where you got engaged. However, you have to think about logistics. For example, cities are beautiful, but if you go that route, be aware of traffic or crowds that you may run into. Also be mindful of the weather if you’re considering having your session outdoors. You’ll want to know if rain is expected that day so you can make a new plan.
2. SCHEDULE AROUND THE SUN
There are certain times of day that are better for photos than others, because of the lighting from the sun. For quality photos, plan your engagement shoot around the sun. The golden hour, or magic hour as we photographers like to call it, is best described as the first and last hour of sunlight when a distinct quality of light produces lovely, swoon-worthy pictures. Avoid scheduling photos for early afternoon because the sun’s direct, overhead position produces harsher lighting.
3. FIND FLATTERING OUTFITS
One of the most important parts of your engagement photos is your comfort level, especially when it comes to what you wear. Choose to wear clothing that makes you feel like the beautiful bride-to-be that you are. One tip for choosing the perfect outfit, whether you pick something from your closet or purchase new, is to try on your options beforehand. Also, while deciding on what to wear, consider the season, weather and shooting location. You’ll want to choose an outfit with colors that match the location and dress comfortably for any kind of weather.
4. RELAX AND HAVE FUN!
One of the best pieces of advice we could give is to just relax and have fun during the shoot! You should allow your engagement shoot to be a part of an all day date. Not only does this provide you with ample time for photos without being rushed, but also, beginning your day with this particular mentality allows you to relax, connect and be romantic as you start your photo shoot. The more fun you have during your engagement photo shoot, the more authentic your pictures will be.
